What do we publish?

  • Date ideas. Everyone needs a little help finding new and interesting dates. Our articles only suggest dates that we have actually tried ourselves. These date ideas are real, fun, and often inexpensive.
  • Failed dates. John C. Calhoun once said, “Learn from your mistakes and build on your successes.” In this spirit, we have several articles outlining what went wrong, what went right, and how to do better next time.
  • Gift ideas. Sometimes flowers just aren’t enough. Browse through our gift ideas to spark your imagination.
  • Acts of kindness. Unexpected gestures of kindness, both received and given, can make us happier than even the best date. These tested acts of kindness show you really care.
  • Advice. What do I wear? What do I say? How do I act? While we can’t tell you exactly how to win someone’s heart, we can steer you in the right direction and guide you around the potholes of dating.
  • Product reviews. We love reviewing books and other products that meet our content guidelines. When we like what we see, we write up an article encouraging our readers to give the product a try.

What do we keep out?

The Awkward Turtle was started to provide a family-friendly resource for relationship tips, ideas, and help. To achieve this goal, we keep the following items out of our articles, ads, and publications:

  • Gambling. A relationship built on gambling probably isn’t going to last very long, so we aren’t even going to suggest it.
  • Sex, drugs, and alcohol. The Awkward Turtle knows that you can have a great time without any of these things, so we aren’t going to publish anything that references any of these items.

Who writes the articles?

  • Us. Many of the articles come directly from the staff’s own experience. If we have a great date or idea, we share it. If a date doesn’t go as expected, then we warn others of our mistakes.
  • You. We accept article submissions from anyone and everyone. Get published! Send us your successes, your flops, and your ideas.
  • Professionals. We occasionally pay a few exceptional writers to provide material for us.

How do we make money?

We believe transparency in how we run our business fosters trust and keeps us honest.

  • Advertising. We carefully use Google AdSense. To prevent inappropriate sites from showing up, we regularly monitor it and block advertisers that do not follow our content guidelines. Additionally, we offer advertising spots directly to advertisers at low rates.
  • Affiliate marketing. Many of our articles directly reference products that our readers may want to buy. We link directly to these products at affiliate sites, such as Amazon.com. Additionally, we link to sites that sell products related to individual articles. For example, an article about hiking may link to REI.
  • Subscriptions. Our print edition isn’t available yet, but we hope to release it soon. Subscription rates will be low to make it affordable to as wide an audience as possible.
