Acts that mean the most come from the personal side. One way to show your companion your affection is to spell it out… on notes! You can buy little heart-shaped sticky notes, or you can cut out heart shapes yourself using anything from Christmas wrapping paper to scrapbooking paper. Maybe you haven’t quite reached the “heart” stage in your relationship, other fun shapes and colors can liven up this act of kindness. Maybe you should use arrows if you want them to follow a path, or cover your partner’s couch in dots, solid or plaid.

The important part is that you tell the person how you feel about them. Be sure to write about a variety of topics.

You can start with easy things like physical attraction: I love your eyes, your long toes are just adorable, or the way you smile makes me smile.

Be sure to include emotional connections and compliments like: you are always so kind, I love how we hold hands so often, or you and I are so happy together.

This is a fun time to point out similarities that sometimes get overlooked: I love that we both like riding bikes, going geocaching is so much fun together, or I’m happy you do/don’t eat meat.

Gratitude is another avenue of thoughts from the heart: I love it when you help me change my oil, thanks for cheering me up when I am down, or you make amazing brownies.

Also, reminding your companion about happy memories, recent or otherwise, will have them smiling for days. Remember that walk we took last week at sunset, our hands entwined? That day flying kites will always be a day I treasure. When they buried me in the sand, you were so sweet to stand over me and let your shadow protect my eyes from the sun.

Anything will do, really. As long as it is something personal between you two, and you put time into thinking about it and mainly her/him!

Presentation of the notes is not as important as what the notes say and mean. However, do not just dump them on the floor and wait for your companion to step on them, they might throw them out! Get creative.

Use the arrow sticky notes to form a path that ends up at a batch of cookies or a new pair of earrings or better yet: YOU! If you used sticky notes: form a heart shape on the wall or cover their workspace, including their monitor or favorite journal, in thoughts from you.

If you cut them out yourself, you could place them on the ground like flower petals, perhaps in a shape like a spiral, house, or two stick figures holding hands, or cover the bed or table with them. The possibilities are endless with this little gift of time and thoughts, from the heart.

A bouquet of flowers is a typical, stereotypical gift for a girl. However, with a little thought and preparation this average gift can be the highlight of your girl’s week. The key is to avoid the stereotypical flower giving occasions. A bouquet on a random Wednesday afternoon is often much better than a bouquet on her birthday.

The best flowers you can give a girl are those that you’ve picked yourself. Head to Wal-Mart and buy some ribbon. A small spool will cost you less than a dollar, and keep the ribbon and a pair of scissors in your car. Now, whenever you drive anywhere, keep your eyes open for a field or area on the side of the road with wild flowers growing.

Once you’ve found a spot, drive by on your way to seeing your girl, pick a few flowers (the scissors will make this easier). Try to get a variety of flowers. Wrap a ribbon around them to hold them together, and surprise her with them when you go to pick her up! Don’t worry if they wilt some on the way to picking her up. She’ll love you for putting forth the effort even if the flowers aren’t the most beautiful.

If you can’t find wild flowers, head to a florist. It is easier to buy a bouquet that the florist has already put together, but you’ll make your girl much happier if you pick at least some of the flowers yourself. Expect to pay about $5 to $25, depending on the types of flowers you pick and the size of the bouquet. Give the florist an idea of your budget before starting.

Pick colors that are appropriate to the mood, such as red/pink flowers if you are trying to be romantic, bright colors if you are trying to cheer her up, or perhaps her favorite colors if you are just trying to show her you care. Don’t worry if you aren’t sure what exactly goes in a bouquet. Once you pick a few flowers you want, a good florist will be able to fill in the bouquet with appropriate flowers that complement your choices. Pay the florist, head to your girl, and surprise her with the beautiful flowers that you picked out just for her!

The next time you go on a date and have a little extra time afterwards, tell your partner that you want to get a postcard for a friend. If you live in a town with a lot of tourism, look for a gift shop or souvenir shop. Even if you don’t live in a town with a lot of tourism you can still normally find postcards of your town at a drugstore, such as CVS, Longs Drugs, or Walgreens.

Have your partner help you pick out a good postcard. If possible, find one that relates to the date that you just went on. If you don’t have any stamps, make sure you stop somewhere, such as Wal-Mart or the post office, and pick some up! Thank your date for their help and finish your date.

As soon as you get home, write a note to your date on the postcard. Try to include something memorable from the date in your message, and thank your date for a great time. If your date isn’t familiar with your signature then it is best to print your name rather than signing it.

Address the postcard to your date, put a stamp on it, and drop it in the mail as soon as you can!

Now for the hardest part: wait. Do not hint at, ask about, talk about, or mention the postcard until your date brings it up. You want it to be a complete surprise!

Please share your success (or lack of success) stories in the comments of this article!
